0935 An Investigation of ICU Ambient Noise Levels as a Potential Source for Poor Sleep Outcomes in a Community Hospital Setting

Abstract Introduction Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are subject to multiple necessary diagnostic and therapeutic interventions throughout course of their treatment that contribute sleep deprivation. These measures increase ambient noise, impacting patient morbidity mortality by exacerbating confusion, ICU-related delirium, recovery time, long term sequelae associated with Post-Intensive Care Syndrome. The World Health Organization suggests critically-ill patients not exceed exposure sound levels higher than 35-40 decibels (dB). In this study, we measured ICU a community hospital setting support intervention conservative bundle or behavior modification visual noise monitoring device. Methods This study took place over two months (October-November, 2021) critical St Agnes Medical Center Fresno, CA. Ambient was monitored using decibel meter (Gain Express Holdings, SLM-25) connected recording software at 1-minute intervals for 24 hours three areas: central stations (Station A B) one occupied room, equidistant both stations. monitor data exported Microsoft Excel (2020 version; Corp, Redmond, WA, USA) analysis. Data from each sample expressed as M±SE (95% confidence interval). Results Both had average 44.1dB± 4.7 48.0dB± 4.3, frequency range 40-50 dB greater 50% time. Station 50-60 approximately 11% time B 30% room 5.4, 50%, Conclusion ICU’s recommended may benefit appropriate such devices order-sets protocols on equipment/staff phone volume, earplugs patients, limiting staff conversation distances away bedside.
